NELKEN SCHOOL is a privately owned co-education school with pupil levels running from kindergarten, primary, and ordinary-level secondary. Nelken School was established on the 14th of January 2022. This school was established with 68 students. Among them, 37 are boys and 31 are girls for kindergarten, primary and secondary levels. Within two weeks of opening, the school had 154 students, including 98 boys and 56 girls, a number that lasted until December 2022. Currently, the school has 206 students, including 108 boys and 98 girls.

The school started with 12 teachers, including 6 females and 6 males. Currently, the school has 16 teachers including 7 females and 9 males. This school, since its inception until now, has been led by Brother Amir Mohamed. The school is located in a rented building in the middle of Zanzibar City, Malindi-Jongeani Street, Unguja, along the Bwawani Hotel’s Road.

The school teaches all subjects in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Education in Zanzibar and Tanzania in general at the relevant level. The language of communication for this school is English for all levels. (i.e., it is an English Medium school). Islamic knowledge and the Arabic language are given high priority at all levels.

The students of this school also have the opportunity to get the basis of these religious studies and the Arabic language through the famous madrasa located inside the building of this school known as Madrasatul Ummul Ammar bin Yassir, which is a branch of the grand madrasa called Madrasatul Munawwar located in Malindi which is among the biggest madrasas currently found here in Unguja.

In addition, this school also runs German language courses, conducted by special teachers from Germany for students and teachers who prefer them. The preliminary results of the national exams for this school for STDs four and six, forms II and IV (2021) are very encouraging after its students got 100 percent pass.
